Once back in the lead, it was a back-and-forth battle between Russell and Antonelli, who provided fireworks in the opening phase in Montreal.

Norris – who started the race on intermediates – made an early pit stop, handing the lead to Antonelli, who had overtaken his teammate at the start. Not long after, Russell struck back and passed the young Italian again, with Antonelli barely keeping his car on the track. In the following laps, the Silberpfeile kept putting pressure on each other. Max Verstappen meanwhile had worked his way up to third place.
