Lando Norris retired painfully from the Canadian GP due to a mechanical problem halfway through the race. The McLaren driver had already seen his race complicated earlier by a strategic gamble from the team, which started both Norris and teammate and reigning world champion Oscar Piastri on intermediates. That choice quickly proved to be wrong, forcing both drivers to switch early to slicks and lose their position in the leading group.

Norris managed to fight back towards the points and was running in eighth place around lap forty. However, a chance for a strong result abruptly disappeared when his car was hit by a technical problem. After a remarkable noise from the car, he steered the MCL40 onto the runoff area and retired from the race. This brought an early end to his progress.
The Briton thus became one of many retirees in a chaotic race. Sergio Perez also did not finish after suffering a serious suspension problem during his return to the pits. Other retirees include George Russell, Fernando Alonso, Alex Albon, and Arvid Lindblad.
