“It was quite hectic,” Verstappen reflected to the media. Already in the opening lap, the Dutchman caused a stir with a spectacular spin. He managed to keep his RB22 on the track skillfully and – miraculously – was not hit by the oncoming traffic. “I lost the rear in corner two and tried to limit the time loss by letting the car spin around.”

“I actually thought I was going to crash, but I went full throttle and managed to get the car fully around,” he further explained. “When I’m done with Formula 1, I can always go rally driving,” he grinned. In an exclusive special of the podcast Formule 1 Paddockpraat, Jos Verstappen revealed that he has invited his son several times for a rally adventure. However, Verstappen junior has always declined; in interviews, he consistently emphasizes that he finds the sport too risky.
