FIA shares unique volunteer survey: ‘Backbone of Formula 1’

The FIA has once again underlined the importance of volunteers within Formula 1 with an extensive study. The report shows that more than 20.000 volunteers are needed to make a full F1 season of 24 Grands Prix possible: during an average race weekend, around 838 volunteers are in action. Furthermore, the organization invests 11 million euro annually in training these unpaid workers.

The FIA study emphasizes that volunteers play an indispensable role in both the safety and the experience of the sport. Their contribution is of great value, despite the substantial investments made by the motorsport federation. Furthermore, the total economic value of their efforts is estimated at 13,2 million euro. Also striking is the loyalty among the volunteers: despite an increasing workload, the majority remains involved. About two-thirds have been active within Formula 1 for more than five years.

Backbone

“The Formula 1 championship depends on volunteers; they are the backbone of our sport,” responded FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem upon the publication of the report. “Without them, we simply would not be able to race. They ensure that our competitions run safely and fairly. They act professionally and with pride, supporting drivers, teams and fans.”
