Formula 1 has landed in Monza for the Italian Grand Prix. But even before the race weekend has started, the FIA is already warning of extreme heat. During the race itself, temperatures around 32 degrees Celsius are expected. Because this temperature is above the FIA’s threshold of 31 degrees, the governing body issues an official heat warning.

Because the FIA has declared the race in Italy a ‘Heat Hazard’, several measures are being taken for the drivers. For example, fans will be placed on the grid and drivers are allowed to use cooling vests and shaded areas. However, not every driver is a fan of the cooling vests. Drivers who choose not to use the FIA-approved cooling system must carry extra ballast on board.
GP Qatar
The protocol around an official heat warning from the FIA was introduced after the 2023 Qatar GP. Due to the extreme heat and humidity, several drivers became unwell, including Logan Sargeant, Lance Stroll, and Alex Albon. Esteban Ocon admitted after the race that he even vomited in his helmet. Earlier this season, a heat warning was also issued for the Austrian Grand Prix.
