Charles Leclerc continues to believe in the title fight: 'I am optimistic'

Charles Leclerc believes Ferrari can compete for the world title this season. After a promising start under the new regulations, the Monegasque is positive, despite the dominant opening phase of the Mercedes cars. “Be consistent and make no mistakes. If that works, we can be competitive,” says Leclerc.

Charles Leclerc emphasizes in Gianluca Gazzoli’s The BSMT podcast that his Ferrari has speed and that there is potential to be competitive. He is positive about Ferrari’s development compared to last season. “I think we have a good car and I enjoy driving it. The team is doing a great job with the updates and the engineers are doing great work,” says the Monegasque.

“Achieve something truly special”

Although Ferrari has made progress, Leclerc remains critical. “I am really happy with how things are going. I feel like I work well with my engineer, because we are on the same page. There is always room for improvement with the car, but we are competitive now. The focus is of course also on the championship, so we have to keep scoring points and competing at the front. That is the goal,” concludes the Ferrari driver.

The Mercedes cars pose a serious challenge, but Leclerc remains confident in the title. “Can I fight for the title? Yes, I think so. If the car is good, the pace is there and we execute everything well, then we can compete. I am optimistic. We have everything we need and I believe that if we continue to work well as a team, we can achieve something truly special. That’s what I’m going for,” Leclerc indicates.

At the same time, Leclerc remains realistic about Formula 1, as it can change quickly. That is why he mainly focuses on the things he can influence himself. “The season is long and a lot changes: strategies, results and sometimes luck. I focus on what I can influence. The pace and speed are there, but it is now up to me to maximize the opportunities. Consistency is crucial. If you maintain that, you will have a chance at the end. That’s what I’m trying to do,” says Leclerc.
