World Championship standings after Japanese GP: Kimi Antonelli takes over lead from Russell

Andrea Kimi Antonelli has won the Japanese GP! The young Mercedes driver not only took his second consecutive victory – the first Italian since Alberto Ascari to achieve this – but also knocked teammate George Russell off the top spot in the drivers’ championship. It is the first time the Italian – the youngest championship leader ever – has led the world championship. Mercedes maintains a firm lead in the constructors’ standings.

George Russell drops back to second place after narrowly missing the podium at Suzuka. The two Ferrari drivers, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, and reigning world champion Lando Norris currently complete the top five. Oscar Piastri has fought his way to sixth place with his first finish of the season and is closely followed by Oliver Bearman and Pierre Gasly. Max Verstappen, meanwhile, falls back to ninth place after his eighth-place finish at Suzuka. Liam Lawson completed the top ten.
