Oliver Bearman caused the first safety car period of the Japanese GP. The Haas driver was in a battle with Franco Colapinto when his car went off track on lap 22 and ended up on the grass. The Briton then came to a halt with a heavy impact into the barriers at turn 13. Bearman was able to climb out of his car quickly, but seemed to be suffering from his ankle after his crash.

For a number of the other drivers, including Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the safety car period meant a free pit stop.
