The Italian hit the wall hard in Melbourne when he lost control of his car after turn 1. At that moment, there were still twelve minutes to go in the third and final practice session. It was subsequently halted by a red flag. Antonelli’s Mercedes was heavily damaged on all sides, so there is work to be done for the mechanics.
Mercedes, and therefore Antonelli as well, is given a good chance of taking the victory in Australia. Ironically, teammate George Russell was on a fast lap at the time of Antonelli’s crash – he was the fastest in the first two sectors – but he could not finish his lap.
