The Monaco GP will become a sprint weekend for the first time in 2027. This was confirmed by Formula 1 on Wednesday, during the presentation of the calendar for next season. The choice for the street circuit in the principality is remarkable: the race in Monte Carlo is not known for many overtaking maneuvers. During the recent Monaco GP, only ten overtaking maneuvers took place during the main race.

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali had already announced it: the expansion of the number of sprints in 2027. On Wednesday it happened, and sprint weekends for the next season were confirmed for the first time in Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco, and Abu Dhabi. The choice for Monaco is said to be to provide a bit more spectacle during the Grand Prix weekend.
With the arrival of a sprint race in Monaco, the weekend schedule will also be significantly changed. On Friday, only one free practice session will be held, before qualifying for the sprint race takes place in the afternoon. This sprint will take place on Saturday morning, before the qualifying for the main race on Sunday is held in the afternoon.

Criticism
The Monaco GP is still one of the classics on the Formula 1 calendar and will continue to be held until 2035. The qualifying on Saturday is considered one of the most exciting moments of the season, but there is increasing criticism of the race on Sunday. Due to the narrow streets, overtaking is difficult during the Monaco GP and the race often turns into a procession.
