With more confidence than expected, Max Verstappen starts qualifying in Monaco on Saturday afternoon. The reason is the pleasant surprise on Friday: the Red Bull car was performing much better than expected. “I felt good in the car,” said the Dutchman.

Realistic as ever, Verstappen warned on Thursday about the problems that the bumps and kerbs in Monaco could potentially cause for the RB22. He was therefore all the happier with the results during the first practice day in the principality. “To be honest, it was quite a positive day. I felt good in the car. Especially in Monaco, that positive feeling is important. We just need to fine-tune a few more things.”

He continues: “Ferrari looks very strong, we need to try to get as close to them as possible. In itself, we are happy with where we are now, but you always try to get a little more out of the car. So we will see what we can do in qualifying.”
