Loek Hartog receives praise after heroic act in GT3 race: ‘You saved a life’

On social media, there is a flood of praise for GT3 driver Loek Hartog and his heroic actions in China. After a terrifying crash at the Shanghai International Circuit, the 23-year-old driver from Hoogmade rescued fellow driver Ollie Millroy from a burning Ferrari. The Brit emphasized on social media that Hartog had saved his life. Several prominent figures from the motorsport community are singing Hartog’s praises.

Especially from the Dutch motorsport scene, Loek Hartog receives much acclaim. GT3 drivers Tom Coronel and Nicky Catsburg responded on social media to the heroic deed. “Legend,” wrote the latter on Instagram. IMSA driver Renger van der Zande was also impressed. “An incredible day in motorsport,” he responded in turn, “Loek (Hartog, ed.), you are a hero.” Reporter Allard Kalff also chimed in: “Well done, Loek Hartog. Hero.”

‘You saved the life of my best friend’

Other fellow drivers from the GT3 world also spoke out. “Thank you for saving the life of my best friend, Loek,” responded the Dane Frederik Schandorff gratefully. “You are a f*cking hero, Loek,” said South African David Perel. Former F1 reporter Will Buxton also reacted to the incident. “It was a day full of terrible accidents in the racing world,” said the Englishman. “It is a reminder of the danger to which the drivers we so admire expose themselves, the incredible level that car design has reached, and sometimes the unimaginable courage shown by good people like Loek Hartog.”

Millroy’s crash was not the only serious accident on Saturday. During the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America at Laguna Seca, American Manuel Gil Del Real flew over the barriers and then landed in the trees beside the circuit. He was taken to the hospital, where he is now in stable condition.
