Lando Norris not convinced by F1 changes: ‘Have to get off the battery’

Lando Norris has been critical of the recent changes to the F1 regulations; he advocates for more drastic changes. The FIA and the F1 leadership implemented changes this weekend in Miami that allowed drivers to push closer to the limit, following ongoing criticism of energy management in the first races of 2026. Although the adjustments are a step in the right direction according to Norris, the Brit believes the problem is not yet solved.

The McLaren driver, who finished second in Miami, emphasizes that the current system still prevents drivers from going all out. “It’s a small step in the right direction, but it’s not yet at the level where Formula 1 should be,” Norris sighed after the race. According to him, it remains frustrating that maximum performance is not always rewarded.

‘Full throttle is punished’

“We already said during qualifying that if you go full throttle everywhere and push as hard as in previous years, you still get punished for it,” he explained. “You still can’t go full throttle everywhere.” Norris therefore sees only one real solution to structurally address the problem and advocates for a radical change of course. “Honestly, I don’t think you can really solve it; you just have to take the battery out. So hopefully that will be the case in a few years.”

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem already brought good news for Norris ahead of the main race. The Emirati revealed that Formula 1 will return to V8 engines in the future. This would make the powertrain less dependent on electric support. Sulayem expects this transition to take place around 2030 or 2031.
