The role of Jos Verstappen in the career of his son Max has diminished over the past years, but the former F1 driver still makes time to follow his son’s performances. Of course, there is a lot of overlap between rally weekends and Grands Prix, but that does not stop the 53-year-old from Limburg from tuning into Formula 1 between the various stages, he says in an exclusive special of the podcast Formula 1 Paddock Talk.

Even now that Jos Verstappen has dedicated himself to rallying, he follows the premier class closely. That means he even watches son Max live from the cockpit of his rally car. Then the seat belts come off and the phone is placed on the dashboard, he gestures. “Hop, phone on, Viaplay on and then watch,” Verstappen senior says. “But during the stages you turn it off for a bit, right?” he is asked with a laugh. “Yes, I think so,” he replies jokingly.
‘What was the result?’
He recalls that Formula 1 and his rally commitments once coincided so much that he had to miss the climax of an exciting Grand Prix. “We were once driving in the ERC, I believe,” Jos Verstappen says. “Max was leading a race at that moment, but it was exciting. He still had fourteen laps to go, while I had to start my stage. The moment I came back, I was immediately asked: ‘Do you want to know what happened?’ I answered: ‘Yes, please!’ Those kinds of moments are nice, of course.”
