Isack Hadjar explains why only Max Verstappen crashed twice due to problems with the rear wing of the RB22. The French-Algerian driver raced in Austria and Great Britain with the same ‘Macarana’ wing on his car, but did not suffer the same fate as his teammate. According to Hadjar, it came down to luck: ‘It could just as well have happened to both of us four times’.

Twice in a row, Max Verstappen lost control of his RB22 during a race weekend and ended a session in the gravel. Both times this was due to problems with the rear wing, causing him to lose grip. Verstappen’s teammate Isack Hadjar raced with the same wing but did not crash. The French-Algerian driver gives his own explanation for how this could happen.
‘Had quite a bit of luck’
“I think I had quite a bit of luck two race weekends in a row,” he says at Spa-Francorchamps about the randomness of the problem. “It could have happened to neither of us, but it could also have happened to both of us four times. Honestly, his problem is just as much my problem, and we need to solve it.” Red Bull removed the ‘Macarena’ wing from the RB22 of both drivers for the Belgian GP.

However, Hadjar does not see only problems at Red Bull; according to the driver, his team has also made good progress. “I think we have definitely done well on the engine side,” he explains. “In Silverstone we were a bit less competitive, but overall still reasonable. For me, it’s mainly about better understanding this new package. As I also said in Austria: we were competitive there, but I didn’t feel good in the car.”
