The new Madring circuit has passed its most important test so far. Thirty Formula 3 drivers took part this week on the 5.4-kilometer circuit, which was thus tested for the first time extensively under competitive conditions. Reportedly, the officials involved had their hands full; several sources report that the red flag was waved very often. In September, Formula 1 will travel to the Madring for the renewed Spanish GP.

Formula 3 tested on Monday and Tuesday in the Spanish capital, before the second half of the season begins in Monza. Ugo Ugochukwu of Campos Racing set the fastest time on Tuesday morning. The American recorded a 1:49.034 and was thus 0.193 seconds faster than Hiyu Yamakoshi. In total, ten teams participated in the two-day test, during which the drivers were able to get extensively acquainted with the new layout of the circuit for the first time.
“I think it was a very positive day,” responded Audi driver and leader in the F3 championship Freddie Slater in a statement. “I find this circuit fantastic to drive on; it is a bit old-fashioned, has some interesting corners and lots of character. It is probably one of the most fun circuits to do a fast lap on. I just enjoy it. I am having fun. Today was a very positive day. I am getting to know the circuit and trying to adapt my driving style and the car a bit to it.”
Red flags
However, the test was not only important for the Formula 3 drivers. The organization of the Madring was also able to gain valuable experience with a view to the first F1 weekend. The race control, marshals, medical services, and recovery personnel were fully active this week. That was much needed, as the test was interrupted several times. Several sources speak of eight to as many as nineteen red flags during the two test days.

Formula 1 will make its official debut at the Madring next month, when Madrid once again hosts the Spanish GP. The race will take place from September 11 to 13 and will thus replace the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, where the race was previously held. Expectations are high, also because there has been a lot of commotion in the region in recent months. A local protest group is strongly opposed to the arrival of Formula 1 in Madrid.
