The remark may be made with a wink, yet it says a lot about the complexity of the rules in Formula 1 and their adjustments, which sometimes go very deep into technical details. “I still need to understand all the details,” says Piastri. “There will still be peculiarities and unexpected situations. But in general, I think it’s a step in the right direction that we can, for example, save less energy and drive more on the limit.”

The impact of the adjustments is expected to vary from circuit to circuit. For example, McLaren had some issues in China that, according to the team, could have been resolved with these adjustments. But the difficulties on circuits like those in Australia and Japan would have been harder to combat. How much the adjustments will help in tackling problems will only become clear from Miami onwards. “You only really know when you hit the track.”
