Those who are concerned about a Formula 1 without Max Verstappen can now sleep a little more soundly based on Lando Norris’ words. The British world champion states, when asked, that he doesn’t see a departure happening anytime soon. “I certainly expect him to stay longer than people think.”

Norris made the statement on Wednesday afternoon in an interview with the media. According to the McLaren driver, a departure of Verstappen would be “a loss for the sport.” But, Norris concludes, he actually sees a longer stay in F1 happening sooner.
Verstappen has indicated several times that the current regulations do not exactly motivate him to remain active in Formula 1 for much longer. Nevertheless, the four-time world champion has never said he would actually leave after, for example, this season. Moreover, those who listen to people close to the action and others in the paddock can conclude that there is a good chance that the Dutchman will ‘simply’ remain in F1. Norris also hopes – and thinks – so.
“He is probably one of the best drivers you will ever see in Formula 1. And you want to race against that,” said the Brit, who cherishes the head-to-head duels. “No matter how difficult he sometimes makes it for us as an opponent, it’s always fun to race against him.”

As one of Max Verstappen’s friends, Norris is also very aware of his passion for other racing disciplines. The reigning world champion said he followed the Dutchman’s performance on TV last weekend. “I enjoyed watching the GTs.”
Despite all the rumors about an early retirement, the McLaren driver ends on a hopeful note. Norris observes that Verstappen has even indicated he is chasing a fifth world title. And partly for this reason, the reassuring conclusion for fans of the Dutchman ultimately came from the Brit: “I certainly expect him to stay in F1 longer than people think.”
