Sebastian Vettel has reacted to the announced rule changes from the FIA. The governing body announced on Monday that it would adjust the 2026 regulations, after repeated criticism from the drivers about the new way of racing. Vettel understands the drivers’ point of view, and hopes that the regulation adjustments will now make the drivers happier: ‘If they get out of the car enthusiastically, that also makes the fans enthusiastic’.

Sebastian Vettel bid farewell to Formula 1 at the end of 2022, but still closely follows all developments in the premier class. The four-time world champion understands the concerns of current Formula 1 drivers about the controversial new cars. For example, battery management plays a much larger role in the 2026 cars, requiring drivers to learn a different driving style.
‘I sympathize with the drivers’
“From a sporting point of view, I understand the criticism and partially agree with it, because the cars are probably not that fun to race with due to the rules and the difficulties associated with them,” Vettel told Swedish SVT. The German world champion had traveled to Sweden to receive the Perfect World Foundation Award 2026.

“So I sympathize with the drivers,” the world champion continues. “And it is very important not to lose the DNA and the core of the sport, namely finding the fastest driver and the fastest car to win a race.”
The FIA has since implemented a number of rule changes to accommodate the drivers, particularly in the areas of qualifying and safety. “I saw it briefly,” Vettel adds about the changes. “I hope that from a sporting point of view – which is what they are trying to address – it makes the drivers happier, because ultimately the drivers are the face of the sport. When they get out of the car full of adrenaline and very enthusiastic, that’s what makes the people on the screens and also in the stands enthusiastic.”
