Brown hopes for return of rival Christian Horner: 'Great personality for the sport'

McLaren CEO Zak Brown has spoken out about a possible return of his old rival Christian Horner. The Brit had to leave after the last British GP, but is not hiding his ambition to get back into F1. Brown is keen on a comeback for Horner: ‘He is a great personality for the sport’.

Christian Horner had to pack his bags at Red Bull in July 2025. The former team principal has not been in the paddock since, but already indicated last February that he still had ‘unfinished business’ in Formula 1. McLaren CEO Zak Brown, who repeatedly clashed with the former Red Bull team principal, would however welcome Horner back into the premier class with open arms.

‘Great if Christian returns’

“I think Christian was a great personality for the sport,” Brown said during a McLaren press conference this week. “The sport always has big personalities. They come and go. I would love for Christian to return to the sport. He is a great manager. His track record speaks for itself. I’d rather have ten weak team principals (as competitors, ed.), but that’s not going to happen for now.”

Despite the new influx of team principals in Formula 1, Brown still sees a definite place for veteran Horner. “There is constantly a huge amount of talent coming through. There have been many changes in team principal positions over the past two to three years, but I think it would be great to have him back in the sport,” said the American CEO. “And given his passion for the sport and his age, I would be surprised if he didn’t return, whether that’s with Alpine or someone else.”
