Fern had been active in the F1 paddock for 35 years and served as a tire technician at Aston Martin. ‘We will greatly miss his warmth and humor,’ the British racing team said.

Mike Fern passed away last Wednesday. As a tire mechanic for the Aston Martin team, Fern – who was also affectionately called ‘Biscuit’ – was responsible for the tires on one side of the British team’s garage. He worked in the Formula 1 paddock for 35 years. Since 1999, Fern had been intermittently active for the Aston Martin team, which was then still called Jordan.

“The thoughts of the entire team and the F1 community go out to the family and friends of our teammate Mick Fern, who was affectionately called ‘Biscuit’ by many of us and who passed away peacefully on Wednesday,” reads the official statement from Aston Martin. “Biscuit was a true pillar who showed loyalty and support to everyone around him. He welcomed everyone with open arms and made sure we felt more at home during our travels.”
“Biscuit spent 35 years in the paddock and was respected by everyone he worked with,” the statement continues. “We are all immensely grateful for the time we spent together and will greatly miss his warmth and humor.”
