Max Verstappen surprisingly set the fastest time on Friday during the first free practice of the Belgian Grand Prix. The four-time world champion clocked 1:47.070 in his Red Bull car. This was 0.145 seconds faster than the Brit Lewis Hamilton in the Ferrari. His teammate Charles Leclerc from Monaco recorded the third time at 0.207 seconds behind.

Verstappen’s French teammate Isack Hadjar was fourth fastest, at 0.252 seconds, also faster than the McLarens and Mercedes cars. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes came in sixth. No notable incidents occurred. Aston Martin again finished dismally and hopelessly at the back. See here the full results of FP1 for the Belgian GP.
Max Verstappen and teammate Isack Hadjar will receive a new engine. For Max Verstappen, Red Bull’s decision means no grid penalty, as he still falls within the maximum allowed number with the announced new parts.

Later today (at 17:00) the drivers will run the second free practice at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. In the World Championship standings, Antonelli leads with 179 points ahead of his British teammate George Russell (154) and Ferrari driver Hamilton (147). Verstappen is seventh with 76 points.
