For Fernando Alonso, the sprint qualifying on Friday evening ended prematurely. Already in the first part, SQ1, the Spaniard from Aston Martin went off the track hard at turn 3. He came to a stop in the barriers. On the television footage, it is clearly visible that Alonso went straight on and simply locked up.

The incident with Alonso marks the first red flag during the sprint qualifying and already the fourth red flag of the day. In FP1 there were incidents involving Liam Lawson, Alexander Albon, and Esteban Ocon respectively. The first two are absent during the sprint qualifying at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal due to damage to their cars.
