Verstappen on participation in the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring: ‘One of the best races in the world’

Max Verstappen is not only facing 24 Grands Prix in Formula 1 this year, but he is also participating in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring for the first time. With this, a long-cherished wish of the Dutch world champion is coming true, exactly at a time when he is not experiencing driving pleasure in the premier class. “This was of course already planned,” confirms Verstappen, who is already looking forward to the race on ‘one of the best circuits in the world’.

Max Verstappen confirmed on the Monday after the Australian GP that, in addition to the Formula 1 race, he will also participate in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring for the first time this year. This fulfills a long-cherished dream of the Dutchman. “It is one of the best races and circuits in the world,” Verstappen says when asked in China why he wants to participate in the endurance race so much. “To be honest, for me in a GT car, that is the perfect speed to drive there. I think if you go even faster, it could become a bit dangerous in some places.”

In addition, nostalgia also plays a role in his choice to participate. “I’ve been watching for a long time, of course. I also have many friends who have already raced in it. They say it’s one of the most fun things to do ever. And I also like racing against other cars, so this was actually the first time I could really do it.”

Driving pleasure is currently lacking for Verstappen in Formula 1 itself, which led to him being asked if his participation in the race at the Nürburgring is a reaction to driving under the current F1 rules. “This was of course already planned, regardless of what I drive this year,” Verstappen reveals. “Yes, I would of course like to have a bit more fun at the moment (in F1, ed.), but at the same time, I am also very happy that the team lets me do all these things, and yes, it’s just something I’m naturally looking forward to.”

Verstappen’s participation in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring on May 16, and the preparatory NLS race on March 21, can be followed live via Viaplay.
