Toto Wolff overwhelmed by Max Verstappen contract extension: ‘But he stays in the family’

Toto Wolff has also responded to Max Verstappen’s contract extension with Red Bull. The Austrian team principal has sat down several times in recent years with the team around Verstappen to discuss a possible move to Mercedes. However, with the contract extension of the Dutch driver, that ambition of Wolff’s is temporarily over. “But he does drive our Mercedes during the really important races,” the team principal refers to Verstappen’s GT participations.

Toto Wolff has often launched a charm offensive towards Max Verstappen in recent years. The Austrian even left the door slightly open in early August for the Dutchman to eventually step into the Mercedes alongside Andrea Kimi Antonelli. However, Verstappen has now extended his contract with Red Bull. Wolff was therefore asked in Zandvoort about the contract extension of the four-time world champion.

“Well, what can I say,” the Mercedes team principal was momentarily at a loss for words to Viaplay. “I am sure that Raymond (Vermeulen, Verstappen’s manager, ed.) has done a good job. And yes… we will see.”

‘Max still drives a Mercedes during important races’

However, Verstappen’s contract extension with Red Bull does not change the world champion’s future participation in GT races. There, he does drive a Mercedes car. “We have the best of him, he does drive our Mercedes during the really important races,” Wolff continues. “The Nordschleife and maybe a few more will be added, so he stays in the family.”
