Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali is open to the return of the German GP on the F1 calendar. The Italian even reveals that talks have already taken place with the organization behind Hockenheimring, the beloved German circuit. “For the first time, there is again an opportunity to do something together with Hockenheim,” Domenicali says.

The last time Formula 1 traveled to Germany for a race was in 2020. As an emergency solution for the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, a Grand Prix was held at the Nürburgring. The last German GP took place in 2019 at Hockenheim. However, CEO Stefano Domenicali is opening the door again for a return of the beloved circuit to the Formula 1 calendar.
“We also see that Europe continues to grow,” said the CEO about the European market, to Auto, Motor und Sport. “It is becoming an important market again. The numbers speak for themselves. Hockenheim has contacted us,” Domenicali then reveals. “Initial talks have already taken place. The circuit is currently being modernized. But if there is to be a possible Formula 1 event, investments are needed. Our platform requires a certain level of investment.”

Long term
Still, Domenicali sounds positive about a return of the German circuit. “For the first time, there is again an opportunity to do something together with Hockenheim,” the Italian continues. “We are not only thinking about the short term, but about a long-term collaboration.”
The organization behind the Hockenheimring itself does not want to get ahead of things just yet. “We are regularly in contact with Formula 1. We want to get a complete picture of the possibilities, the opportunities, and the risks,” says general director Jorn Teske. “There is interest, but at this moment there are no results to report. Should there be a concrete prospect for a Grand Prix, we will gladly inform you about it.”
