Nikola Tsolov has completed his first Formula 1 test. The Bulgarian Red Bull junior took part on Thursday for Racing Bulls at Imola and covered a total of 690 kilometers with the VCARB 02, the car with which the team raced in 2025. The test is part of Red Bull’s TPC program. Tsolov is considered one of the most promising talents at the moment and is aiming for an F1 seat for 2027.

For Tsolov, the test at Imola was his first real introduction to an F1 car. Previously, he had only done demonstrations for Red Bull. The current leader in the Formula 2 championship thus got an important opportunity to prove himself within the Red Bull program. Team principal Alan Permane was satisfied with the Bulgarian’s performance afterwards.
“Today was a very positive step for Nikola (Tsolov, ed.),” said Permane in a statement. “He adapted quickly to the car and showed the calmness you want to see in a driver stepping into an F1 car for the first time. This test is part of the ongoing development plan that the team carries out for its junior drivers,” the Englishman explained. “It provides them with the resources, the kilometers, and the environment to develop. We have seen time and again what this path can yield, and days like today contribute to how we continue to build on this.”

Nikola Tsolov after F1 test: ‘Still don’t realize it’
Tsolov is meanwhile seriously working on his ambition to become the first Bulgarian F1 driver. The 19-year-old hopes to make the step to the top class this winter, but he faces tough competition. At Racing Bulls, Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad – both having an impressive season for the Red Bull sister team – are currently secured. Tsolov will therefore have to clearly distinguish himself to displace one of them from the line-up. An F1 contract with another team seems unlikely due to his close ties with the Red Bull training school.
“My first TPC day in a Formula 1 car is done, and I’m super happy with how it went today,” Tsolov responded calmly. “I really enjoyed every lap and it’s hard to put into words what it means to me to finally get this chance. My thanks go to Racing Bulls and the Red Bull Junior Team for their trust in me and for this opportunity. It’s something I have worked towards my whole life, so to finally experience it is really incredible. I think I still don’t fully realize what we achieved today, but I enjoyed every lap and hopefully I’ll get the chance to add some more kilometers soon.”
