Whoever thinks McLaren will win the team’s thousandth Grand Prix in Monaco, according to Lando Norris, might be mistaken. The Englishman, reigning world champion, warns when asked that Ferrari and indeed Mercedes are the favorites for the GP in the principality.

Last year, Norris won the Grand Prix in the place where he lives. “Our goal is always, of course, to go for pole and to win the race. This weekend is no different. But we are not as well positioned now as we were around this time last season.”
The reigning world champion points to Ferrari and Mercedes. “Ferrari might not be the fastest on the straight, but it does have a lot of downforce. That’s a real advantage and we’ll probably see that this weekend in Monaco. And Mercedes, well, that team is just fast in every race this season.”

So maybe not a favorite, but there is hope for a surprise. According to Norris, this is due to the characteristics of the circuit. “Slow corners and little grip, that’s how we won last season. That gives confidence.”
