Montoya under fire again for striking statement: ‘Saving Verstappen was pure luck’

Juan Pablo Montoya raises eyebrows again with a statement about Max Verstappen. Earlier, the Colombian suggested that the Dutchman should receive penalty points from the FIA due to his criticism of the F1 regulations. After the Miami GP, he showed little impression of a save by Verstappen, who managed to keep his car on the track after a spin in the opening lap. “Pure luck,” he responded indifferently.

“Do you call that talent? I think it was pure luck,” Montoya said about Verstappen’s move in a broadcast of F1TV. The former driver suggested that a spinning car often comes to a stop at the right moment. This again drew the anger of many Verstappen fans. “Montoya calls it luck,” said Bleekemolen, “but that is precisely Verstappen’s technique and what ultimately makes him so good. At a certain point, he gives up and chooses to do that 360. Other drivers would still try to correct, but he immediately thinks: ‘I can’t make it.’ Then he spins the car around and manages – with the throttle, clutch, and brake – to get the car around at the right moment and keep driving.”
