McLaren team principal Andrea Stella takes a closer look at the RB22. The Italian’s attention was drawn in Miami by the upgrades brought by the Red Bull team. However, it was not the much-discussed ‘Macarena’ wing that caught Stella’s eye: ‘If you look at Red Bull’s concept for the sidepods, it deviates quite a bit.’

Red Bull caused a stir in Miami by introducing their own version of the ‘Macarena’ wing. Ferrari had already raced with this rear wing – which owes its nickname to the rotating movement during deployment – but the Austrians used it for the first time in Florida. However, McLaren team principal Andrea Stella’s attention was drawn to a completely different upgrade on the RB22: the sidepods.
Sidepods
“It’s very interesting. If you look at Red Bull’s new concept for the sidepods, it deviates quite a bit from the concept chosen by, for example, Mercedes and Ferrari. McLaren’s style is also very different,” the Italian team principal analyzes to the media. “At some point, there will be stabilization, a convergence, but it seems we are still far from that convergence.”

Stella expects that several teams will look at the sidepods on the RB22. “So I think there will be a process where we look at each other and try things out,” the team principal continues. “Every team will certainly keep testing and scrutinizing Red Bull’s concept to discover its advantages.”
