Max Verstappen cautiously towards GP Monaco: ‘Keep working hard as a team’

Max Verstappen will start this weekend at the Monaco GP. During the previous race weekend in Canada, the Dutchman finished on the podium for the first time in 2026. This underlines the progress Red Bull has made; Verstappen said he felt ‘more comfortable’ in the car. With Monaco in mind, the four-time world champion is mainly focusing on the right strategy and a strong qualifying.

“We have already taken some positive steps forward in Miami and the pace is much closer to where it needs to be,” Verstappen said in an official preview. “I felt that we could get more out of the car and I felt more comfortable in the cockpit. However, we continue to work hard because there are always areas where we can improve. That’s how we work as a team.”

Right strategy

The upcoming race in the principality, however, brings unique challenges. On the historic circuit, with its tight corners and narrow streets, drivers cannot afford a single mistake. “Monaco is always about the right strategy and, as so often, a strong qualifying result will be crucial,” Verstappen continued. The last three editions of ‘the crown jewel’ were all won from pole position.

After a week without a Grand Prix, Verstappen is looking forward to a race close to home. “It was nice to have some time to prepare for the double header. Also, it’s nice to be close to home and see family, especially after a hectic weekend on and off the track.” The Red Bull driver has won the Monaco GP twice, in 2021 and 2023. Last year he finished in fourth place.
