According to Kimi Antonelli, his recent success in Formula 1 does not lead to a division among Italian fans. The tifosi have traditionally cheered for Ferrari, the national pride. However, the most promising Italian driver in a long time races for Mercedes, currently the biggest competitor of the Scuderia. Still, Antonelli sees few fans caught in a dilemma; according to him, Italians embrace the success of both camps.
“Ferrari is huge; it is a brand that is part of the history of Formula 1,” Antonelli confirmed in an interview with FormulaPassion. “So I understand the popularity, but at the same time, I am delighted with the support I experience in Italy. That is also constantly growing. It is wonderful to see and experience. I can’t wait to race in Monza, because I think it will be a very special weekend. I think the atmosphere will be fantastic, because it is a weekend full of passion.”
The young World Championship leader awaits a special confrontation with the Ferrari drivers in front of his home crowd. So far, the Italian rivalry has not caused major incidents. Antonelli has previously indicated that he also receives few negative reactions on social media. Additionally, he believes that broader competition – including from Ferrari – makes the title fight more attractive.

Kimi Antonelli flirts with Ferrari
“It is different when you only have to compete against your teammate,” he admitted. “It would mean that the team is so dominant that even if you don’t win, you become second without major problems. It’s just more fun when more teams participate. It offers an extra challenge and leaves less room for mistakes. As soon as you make a mistake in qualifying, you might end up P4 instead of P2, because Ferrari – or McLaren or Red Bull, depending on the weekend – is in your way.”
When Antonelli received the Bandini trophy in Italy in June, it became clear that he enjoys a lot of support among Italian fans. Still, he was also asked there about a possible collaboration with Ferrari. “You never know,” he laughed to Bologna Today. “But I am very happy at Mercedes and my goal is to win a lot with this team. They gave me a chance at a young age and have always supported me. That is why I primarily feel a certain loyalty towards Mercedes. What happens after that, we will see.”
