Hamilton escapes penalty for Canada sprint race, retains sixth place

Lewis Hamilton can breathe a sigh of relief. The seven-time world champion was called to the stewards after the sprint race in Canada. The Ferrari driver was said to have left the track during his battle with Oscar Piastri and potentially gained an advantage. However, the race officials now judge that none of that is true. Hamilton thus retains his sixth-place finish.

Lewis Hamilton drove an eventful sprint race in Canada. For the first time, the seven-time world champion hit the ‘Wall of Champions’ at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve – the spot where Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher, and Jacques Villeneuve all crashed in the same race weekend in 1999 – causing him to lose his fourth position in the race. Both Oscar Piastri and teammate Charles Leclerc managed to overtake the Brit at the last moment. “Piastri came alongside me in the last corner and actually passed me. Because of that, I also lost my position to Charles,” Hamilton explained afterwards.

Hamilton remains sixth

Hamilton thus finished sixth but threatened to lose this place after the race. The Ferrari driver was called to the stewards. During his battle with Piastri, Hamilton briefly left the track and was said to have gained an advantage. According to the stewards, however, this was not true, and Hamilton was ahead of Piastri at the moment he went off track. “Car 44 (Hamilton, ed.) was not defending his position at that moment according to the stewards and therefore did not gain any advantage,” reads the official FIA statement. As a result, the Briton receives no time penalty and retains his sixth place.
