Franco Colapinto builds confidence: ‘I am happier than last year’

Franco Colapinto looks at the F1 season with a completely different feeling than a year ago. The Argentine notices that Alpine’s revival has given him a boost not only sportingly, but also mentally. Last year he was – along with Jack Doohan – the only driver who failed to score points. During the last Chinese GP, however, Colapinto finished in the top ten for the first time on behalf of the French team. That gives him more self-confidence for the rest of the season.

“Of course I am happier,” he told the media in Suzuka. “When you can fight a bit further forward, it gives you more self-confidence. That ensures that you give that little bit extra in certain situations.” Last year was different. Alpine quickly focused on the new regulations for 2026, causing Gasly and especially Colapinto to finish at the very bottom. The Frenchman had moderate success, but his less experienced teammate failed to score points.

The gamble on 2026 is paying off for now. Partly thanks to the powerful Mercedes engine, the tally after three races is already at 16 World Championship points; the development of the A526 is bearing fruit. Yet Colapinto still sees room for improvement. “I think it is also very positive to know that there is still a lot to improve,” he explained. “The fact that we are already scoring points while we are not yet performing at our best bodes well. So yes, I think I have a very competitive mindset this year and that makes me happy. And of course, we continue to strive for consistent points finishes.”
