Fernando Alonso travels this weekend for the 23rd time in his Formula 1 career to his home country Spain for the Spanish Grand Prix. The two-time world champion has been driving at the back of the field all season due to ongoing problems with the Aston Martin car, but remains hopeful that the new circuit Madring offers a chance for a better result: “If there is a chance to score another point, fine. If not, that is fine too“, he says soberly.

Fernando Alonso again had a difficult race weekend at Monza. After 23 laps at the ‘Temple of Speed’ the Grand Prix was already over for the Aston Martin driver. Alonso now has three world championship points after thirteen races this year, his lowest number since his debut season at Minardi. Yet the Spanish star is optimistic on the eve of his second home race of the year. Earlier this season, a Grand Prix was also held in Barcelona.
“Of course, we are at the back of the starting grid, so honestly I’m not too worried about this year,” Alonso concluded to the media. “If there is a chance to score another point, fine. If not, that is fine too.”
The Spaniard then looked ahead to the upcoming races. “I think Las Vegas will again be such a weak point where we expose our weaknesses on these long straights, maybe even more,” he said. “But there will also be other race weekends where we can have more fun, maybe in Singapore or Austin or something like that.”

‘Madring offers a chance for a better weekend’
Also at the new circuit Madring, the Aston Martin driver expects the AMR26 to perform a little better. “Looking ahead, I think that, given the remaining races, we know there will be weekends where we will struggle and weekends that will go better,” he explained. “Maybe the next race at Madring is such a chance for a better weekend.”
Alonso was again asked if he is now thinking about retirement, as he stands on the eve of his 23rd Spanish Grand Prix weekend. “No,” the two-time world champion clearly concluded.
