Fernando Alonso is keeping Aston Martin in suspense a little longer. The Spaniard previously said he would make a decision about his Formula 1 future ‘around the summer,’ but now postpones this by ‘a few days or weeks.’ However, he emphasizes that he will remain involved with Aston Martin for the time being: “Besides, I also have to keep racing and keep feeling that adrenaline.”

How much longer will 45-year-old Fernando Alonso stay in Formula 1? It is a question that has been asked more often this season, especially since his team Aston Martin consistently races at the back every race. The Spaniard’s current contract expires at the end of the season, but team principal Adrian Newey has already expressed hope that Alonso will stay in Formula 1 for the time being.
Earlier, Alonso himself indicated he would come with news about his future ‘around the summer,’ but upon the return of F1 after the summer break, he pushes this deadline aside. “I don’t have a deadline either,” he told the media in Zandvoort. “I just got back from vacation, so I’ll see how it goes in the coming days or weeks. Lawrence (Stroll, owner of Aston Martin, ed.) is here this weekend, so I’ll have a nice lunch and coffee with him.”
Whether a decision about Alonso’s future will be made immediately then, the Spaniard does not yet know. “Or maybe it will happen in Monza, I don’t know when Lawrence will come by again,” continues the Aston Martin driver. “I also have to visit the factory again to practice Madrid (the Spanish GP, ed.) on the simulators, so maybe if Lawrence or Adrian (Newey, ed.) is there then. Maybe in the coming weeks.”

‘A third world title is the ultimate dream’
What Alonso does confirm already is that the upcoming upgrades will not influence his decision. Furthermore, the Spaniard – whether as a full-time driver or not – will remain connected to Aston Martin for the time being. “I will stay with this team in some role in the long term,” he said. “It’s not about myself, nor about the question of who will drive next year, or whether I will drive next year or for another three years. I don’t know. I would be happy if I can be of more value in another role.”
Still, the Spaniard will not immediately turn his back on racing. “I have to drive somewhere, that’s for sure,” he says. “I have to race and feel the adrenaline. I already have all the challenges in my head, as I have often said: to one day win the Dakar, or try again at the Indy 500, or whatever comes my way. But also winning a third world championship in Formula 1, that is of course the ultimate dream.”
