American Ugo Ugochukwu secures F3 title, expected chaos does not materialize

A greater contrast was almost impossible during the last Formula 3 weekend of the season. A day after the chaotic start in the junior class, there was little action during the race on Sunday. Only a late safety car caused some commotion, but it didn’t matter for Ugo Ugochukwu: the American driver finished second and thus secured the F3 title.

The last race of the Formula 3 season started much calmer than the one less than 24 hours earlier. All drivers managed to get through the first laps unscathed. Title contender Ugo Ugochukwu started the race from the front row, while closest challenger Freddie Slater had to come from further back in the field. However, the British driver only managed to gain one position in the opening phase of the race and then got stuck in eighth place.

For a long time, the Formula 3 race seemed to be a done deal, until in lap 17 Hiyu Yamakoshi came to a stop. The safety car had to come out after all. With one lap to go, it went off the track again. This resulted in a one-lap sprint to the finish line. It didn’t matter for Ugo Ugochukwu: the American crossed the finish line second and thus secured the title in the Formula 3 championship. Tuukka Taponen took his first victory from pole.
