Max Verstappen is afraid that the Madring – this weekend’s venue for the Spanish GP – has the potential to cause ‘some big crashes’. The Dutchman predicted this ahead of the very first race weekend near the Spanish capital Madrid. Verstappen has already explored the circuit on the simulator and therefore expects a big challenge: “It’s actually not an easy circuit at all.”

Like the other drivers, Max Verstappen is also traveling to the Madring for the first time this race weekend. Unlike Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton and circuit ambassador Carlos Sainz, the Dutchman has not yet driven a meter on the brand-new asphalt.
‘Madring can cause big crashes’
In Red Bull’s preview, Verstappen revealed that he has trained a lot on the simulator for the upcoming Spanish GP. The Red Bull driver already pointed out the ‘many difficult corners’ as the biggest challenge of the circuit. In a recent livestream from his sim racing team, Verstappen further explained why the Madring seems such a difficult track.

“I think it’s going to be very difficult,” Verstappen said honestly. “It’s actually not an easy circuit at all. If you do a few laps in a row, it’s still very hard to cross the line and say, ‘Yes, that was a top lap!’. Very difficult.” The Dutch world champion even predicts: “The track has the potential in some places to cause some big crashes. In that respect, the circuit reminds me a bit of Jeddah, because of the fast corners and the walls that are always close by.”
