Kimi Antonelli seemed on his way to victory during the last Dutch GP at Zandvoort, but ultimately had to settle for second place. The Mercedes driver could no longer hold off Lando Norris and thus saw a fine victory slip through his fingers. “I was sliding all over the place.”

Still, satisfaction prevailed afterwards. “It was a very intense race and I took the lead. During the first stint it went well, but during the second it went worse. I no longer felt in the car and was sliding all over the place.”
Antonelli initially managed to keep Norris behind him, but could no longer keep up with the pace of the McLaren in the second half of the race. “Lando overtook me and after that I had no chance.” This meant the Italian finished ahead of his Mercedes teammate George Russell, who started from second place. Russell let Antonelli pass on team orders in the final phase and completed the podium. “George was a great teammate and I’m glad he finished third.”

Antonelli sees that Mercedes still has some work to do. “In terms of race starts we have made great strides and that paid off. Now we need to find some more speed, because McLaren has made huge progress, so we have to keep fighting.”
