Netflix releases new documentary about Michael Schumacher: ‘Legend is born’

Netflix is releasing a new documentary on October 2 about Michael Schumacher’s first world title. Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend dives into the turbulent 1994 F1 season, in which the then 25-year-old German developed from a promising underdog into champion. The German-language documentary follows the previously released documentary Schumacher from 2021. Corinna Schumacher, the wife of the legendary driver, promises to share insights again.

The documentary was already presented earlier this year during an event by Netflix Germany. Central to it is Schumacher’s breakthrough year, in which he won the first Grand Prix of the season in Brazil and ultimately claimed his first world title. Netflix promises to not only focus on the sporting achievements but also on the events that made the 1994 season one of the most eventful years in F1 history. Think of the fatal accident of Ayrton Senna at Imola.

Turning point in F1 history

“1994 marks a turning point in the history of Formula 1,” reads the synopsis of the new documentary. “The 25-year-old Michael Schumacher wins the first race of the season in Brazil, laying the foundation for an unprecedented career. The year 1994, one of the most dramatic and exciting racing seasons in Formula 1 history, featured impactful events such as the fatal accident of Ayrton Senna, as well as accusations of manipulation and unfair driving maneuvers. At the same time, a true ‘Schumi-mania’ arose.”
