Problems are piling up for Max Verstappen and Red Bull: ‘I am sick’

Max Verstappen qualified on Saturday in seventh place for his very last home race at Zandvoort. The Dutchman spoke afterwards of a ‘lack of pace’, which has been troubling Red Bull throughout the entire Dutch GP weekend. That is not the only problem Verstappen is facing; he confirmed once again that he has been feeling sick all weekend. His expectations for the race on Sunday are therefore realistic.

“I don’t know what to expect tomorrow,” Verstappen said to the media in the paddock. “It’s difficult to make statements about the race because we simply lack pace. We have already made quite a few adjustments, but so far that hasn’t made a difference; the balance has remained the same all weekend. Because of that, I couldn’t really push to the limit or feel comfortable in the car; hence why we are where we are.”

Because a sprint race was also held on Saturday, Verstappen expects the competition to be sharpened. “Everyone learns from the sprint how to approach the race. Most of those ahead of me pushed a bit too hard at the start, so they will probably all adjust that for tomorrow. We simply lack speed and we have to try to run our own race.”

When asked if his health has improved since his arrival in Zandvoort, Verstappen confirmed that he is still not fit. “I am sick, I have not felt well all weekend,” he admitted. Yet the four-time world champion wanted to downplay the consequences of that. “I don’t think it affects my performance. Once you’re in the car, it all works out.”
