Carlos Sainz remains connected to Williams beyond 2026. The Spaniard has signed a new multi-year contract with the British racing team, definitively ending speculation about his future. Recently, there were whispers that Sainz might move to another team, with Audi being mentioned as a possible destination. However, the 31-year-old driver chooses continuity and once again expresses his confidence in Williams’ long-term project.

Sainz made the switch to Williams in 2025 and immediately played an important role in the team’s rebuilding. In his first season for the team, he achieved three podium finishes. Williams ultimately finished fifth in the constructors’ championship. However, in 2026, the team from Grove is experiencing a difficult season. After the first half of the season, Williams is eighth, while Sainz has only scored points three times and teammate Alex Albon finished in the top ten twice.

A departure of Sainz therefore did not seem unthinkable, but concrete alternatives ultimately did not materialize. Audi is sticking with its current driver duo, while a move to Red Bull in the event of Max Verstappen’s departure never really seemed a realistic option. With the contract extension, Sainz’s future is now clear and he remains part of Williams’ long-term project. Under team principal James Vowles, the team aims to return to the forefront of Formula 1.

With the extension, Williams’ lineup for 2027 is also complete. Albon had already extended his contract earlier, meaning the team will enter its 50th anniversary in 2027 with both drivers. The experienced Sainz, who has already won Grands Prix with Ferrari, is a key figure. The Madrid native is also one of only three drivers to have raced for Williams, McLaren, and Ferrari, alongside Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell.
