Kimi Antonelli leads the Formula 1 championship after two consecutive victories. The nineteen-year-old Italian is thus the youngest F1 leader ever. Reason enough for the Italian media to go big. Perhaps a little too big, thinks Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff.

“In Italy, everyone wants to talk about world championships and comparisons with Senna come up. I don’t like reading that. He is nineteen years old,” Wolff warns during an online media session.
The Austrian himself sees a driver who is developing exactly as Mercedes had hoped. His first season brought great moments, but also difficult ones. That was part of it. “Now we are in the second year and he continues to develop in a way we expected and predicted.”

In the title fight, Antonelli has left teammate George Russell nine points behind. Within the team, Mercedes consciously alternates between support and top performance. “There are moments when we put an arm around him. Other times we exert more pressure. But everything comes together as expected.”
