McLaren is open to building its own engines in the future. This is confirmed by CEO Zak Brown now that the discussion about changes to future engine regulations has flared up again. McLaren is in principle still a customer team of Mercedes until 2030. The American CEO immediately sets an important condition: ‘If it is financially feasible’.

McLaren CEO Zak Brown sent a letter earlier this month to FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem calling for restrictions on sister teams in F1. The McLaren CEO has repeatedly expressed his dissatisfaction with so-called ‘A/B teams’ in the premier class and took a next step with his letter.
But those who throw the ball can expect it back. Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies pointed out that taking engines is also a form of cooperation in Formula 1. McLaren is still a customer team of engine supplier Mercedes until 2030.

McLaren as a factory team?
Now that the discussion about the future engine regulations has flared up again – FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem already confirmed the return of V8 engines in 2030 or 2031 – Brown is also open to the idea of McLaren developing the engines themselves. “I think if there was an engine concept that is financially feasible, we would certainly consider that and the technology,” the CEO said during a visit to the Indy 500.
“That said, we are extremely satisfied with Mercedes,” he immediately added. “So yes, if something is presented to us that is financially sensible in the first place, then we will certainly look at it.”
