FIA President Ben Sulayem wants to get rid of term limits for the presidency

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has submitted a proposal to remove the term limits for the FIA presidency. If the proposal is approved by, among others, the members of the FIA General Assembly, the Emirati can remain as president for longer than the currently allowed three terms.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem was re-elected as FIA president last December. The Emirati, who succeeded Jean Todt at the end of 2021, is in his second four-year term. Under the current regulations, a person may be re-elected twice. However, Ben Sulayem wants to change that. The FIA president has therefore submitted a proposal to remove the limit on the number of terms.

Proposal

The plan to amend the FIA statutes regarding the number of terms someone may serve as president will be discussed at next month’s FIA General Assembly. “A proposal has been submitted to establish a uniform approach to term limits across all FIA bodies, similar to what currently applies to the world councils and the senate,” said an FIA spokesperson. “The proposal still needs to be approved by the world councils and the General Assembly. The FIA bodies retain full authority to democratically elect their officials.”

The limit of three terms for an FIA president was set by Ben Sulayem’s predecessor Jean Todt. The Frenchman was in turn the successor of Max Mosley, who served as FIA president from 1993 to 2009, after a dispute with the teams.
