Coulthard: ‘Verstappen fits much better in the world of Ferrari than Mercedes’

David Coulthard has also weighed in on Max Verstappen’s future in Formula 1. The further career of the four-time world champion is a popular topic of speculation, especially after the Dutchman openly doubted his future in the top class earlier this season. If Verstappen does indeed want to trade Red Bull for another team, Coulthard does not think Mercedes is the best choice: ‘He fits much better in the world of Ferrari’.

Max Verstappen still has a contract with Red Bull until 2028, but has long been linked to a move to a rival team. Especially in 2025, when Toto Wolff launched an open charm offensive towards the world champion, Verstappen was linked to Mercedes. It remained just rumors. The Dutchman did openly doubt his F1 future after the first race weekends with the 2026 cars. Verstappen already labeled the cars during the test days in Bahrain as ‘unworthy of F1’.

During the last Grand Prix in Miami, Verstappen noticed an upward trend again at Red Bull, but that does not completely halt the speculations about his F1 future. If Verstappen still wants to switch to another team, David Coulthard does not think Mercedes is the right stable for him.

‘Max fits better at Ferrari’

“I think Max actually fits better in the world of Ferrari than in that of Mercedes,” he said in the Up To Speed podcast. “I know they have a good relationship and I know he drives a Mercedes in the GT3 races he participates in. But the freedom to just be Max, I think would suit Ferrari better. At Ferrari, you just arrive, drive fast, probably win the races, and then go home.”
