Sergio Pérez has emphasized that Cadillac is doing everything possible to quickly catch up with the midfield in Formula 1. Although the new team is still far from consistent points finishes, Cadillac has impressed by not immediately ending up at the back of the field in the opening phase of the season – it can regularly compete with Aston Martin. The Americans also made a clear step forward in front of their home crowd in Miami.
The competition with Aston Martin plays an important role in this, Sergio Pérez explained. Cadillac brought upgrades to Miami, while Aston Martin was the only team not to introduce new parts. “There is still some work to be done, but I am confident that we are moving in the right direction,” the Mexican told the press in Florida. “I see that once we have tire wear under control, we can keep up well with the midfield, although they are still able to increase the pace afterwards.”
Development battle
Pérez also warned that Cadillac does not want to lose time in the development battle. “Of course, it is still a long season, but we are in a hurry to improve our performance because we know that Aston Martin will also improve and we do not want to fall behind.” The six-time race winner sees the battle with the established team as extra motivation for the young racing team, which is trying step by step to connect with the midfield. According to Pérez, tire wear remains an important point of attention.
“We enjoy racing with them (Aston Martin, ed.),” he continued optimistically. “Especially Fernando Alonso always delivers great battles; he races fairly and hard.” Pérez thinks that Cadillac should mainly use the coming weeks to better understand the current package. “Understanding this package is crucial to take further steps towards Canada,” he emphasized. “Only in this way will we come to better solutions. We do not have much time, but especially tire wear must be addressed in the short term. We do have ideas about that, but the implementation will be the biggest challenge for the team in the coming weeks.”
