James Vowles is determined to bring Williams back to the F1 top. The team principal even calls the rebuilding of the British racing team his ‘life mission’. Vowles, who has been at the helm since 2023, has spent the past years laying the foundation for a structurally competitive Williams. In 2025, this visibly paid off, but in the current season the team took a clear step back. Nevertheless, both Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz have now extended their contracts.

Williams had a difficult start to the 2026 season and arrived at the winter tests in Bahrain with a car that was too heavy. Moreover, the team had to miss the private shoot-out in Barcelona. Yet Vowles remains convinced that the right mentality can ultimately make the difference. “There are so many difficult experiences in life, but as long as you have the right approach, you come out of it a better person,” he declared in a Williams podcast.

“Secondly, I am stubborn and persistent, and we will reach the level we need to reach,” he continued determinedly. “It will be my life mission to achieve this, but that also applies to both of you,” he addressed Albon and Sainz, who joined the same podcast. “Because we all share that same feeling, that will be our strength,” he concluded proudly.

In the run-up to the summer break, it was still uncertain whether both drivers felt the same dedication. Especially the Spaniard, who made the switch from Ferrari to Williams, was unimpressed by the team’s form after the first Grands Prix. In 2025, Sainz had still achieved several podiums, but under the new F1 regulations Williams has to fight just to finish in the points at all. Nevertheless, he signed a new multi-year contract ahead of the Dutch GP. Vowles also expressed his gratitude towards both drivers. “It will be an absolute honor to have you by my side next year, but hopefully for many years after that as well,” he sincerely said.
