Fernando Alonso scores points at Zandvoort and breaks record: ‘Everything went well today’

Fernando Alonso has set a new record. With his ninth place at Zandvoort, he is the only 45-year-old driver to have scored points in Formula 1 in the past fifty years. Alonso even received a rare congratulation from team principal Adrian Newey via the radio: “Everyone did everything right today,” the Spaniard praises his team Aston Martin.

A result that Aston Martin could only dream of earlier this season: Fernando Alonso taking ninth place and two valuable championship points in the dunes of Zandvoort. Team principal Adrian Newey even made his voice heard briefly via the radio: “Well done, Fernando,” said the Brit in a rare moment. “That was a great race. Very disciplined, and a huge boost for everyone involved at Silverstone (the home base of Silverstone, ed.). Thank you.”

The Spaniard himself is of course also happy with the result. “It is also more than deserved by the team,” Alonso says in Aston Martin’s review. “Everyone did everything right today. We started on the right tires. But also the strategy and when we would make a pit stop. At the end, the Virtual Safety Cars caused some tricky moments. We then had to decide whether or not to make a pit stop. The team decided to keep me out, and that was the right choice.”

Alonso also congratulates the entire Aston Martin team on the result. “The new parts we brought here have delivered the hoped-for performance,” he continues proudly. “Hopefully this provides motivation to keep going. We have found the right direction, so now it’s time to keep improving.”
