Drivers will miss Zandvoort: ‘Even though the fans mainly come here for one driver’, jokes Norris

Lando Norris, Nico Hülkenberg, and George Russell also regret that the Dutch GP is disappearing from the Formula 1 calendar. This coming weekend will be the last race through the Dutch dunes. However, if it were up to the drivers, the Dutch Grand Prix would have remained part of Formula 1 for longer: “Even though the fans mainly come here for one driver,” Norris jokes.

It has been known for a while, but this weekend it is finally happening: the very last Formula 1 race at Zandvoort. Although there is no shortage of races on the current F1 calendar, drivers still find it a shame that this weekend will be the last time for now that they race through the Dutch dunes.

“It’s quite a shame,” says Lando Norris in the press conference when asked about the last time at Zandvoort. “I really love the event itself. Also the fans, of course, although they mainly come here for one driver,” the world champion jokingly refers to home hero Max Verstappen. “It’s a great atmosphere here. In general, I always find it more fun to go to smaller races where the fans are more enthusiastic.”

‘Drivers would keep Zandvoort on the calendar’

If it were up to Norris, the Dutch GP would therefore not disappear from the calendar. “But unfortunately, it’s not up to us drivers,” he continues. “If we had been allowed to choose, we would definitely have kept it on the calendar. Really a shame. Hopefully, it will come back someday.”

Nico Hülkenberg – who grew up near the Dutch border – agrees with the McLaren driver. “I also raced a lot here in my junior career,” he says. “Sometimes it feels like we are all in a club, such a good atmosphere there is. I will definitely miss it.” George Russell, in turn, agrees: “It’s a great circuit, so I will definitely miss it too.”
